Meet the TRIO SSS Peer Mentors!

Mariam Arfan
Mariam Arfan serves as a Peer Mentor for TRIO Student Support Services (SSS), providing guidance and support to students navigating their academic journeys. As a junior at Loyola University New Orleans, she is pursuing a double major in Business Analytics and Business Management and is passionate about student success, leadership, and mentorship.
With a deep appreciation for TRIO's impact on her college experience, Mariam is committed to giving back by helping students overcome challenges and achieve their goals. She strives to create an inclusive and welcoming environment where students feel empowered to succeed.
Beyond TRIO, Mariam is actively involved in multiple student organizations on campus. Mariam’s background includes leadership roles in student organizations, event coordination, and community engagement. She is dedicated to assisting students with academic planning, personal development, and navigating college life.
In her free time, Mariam enjoys reading, painting, engaging with student organizations, and participating actively in the Loyola community.

Silas Gillett
Silas Gillett is a dedicated Peer Mentor with TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) at Loyola University New Orleans where he supports students in achieving academic and personal success. Silas is a junior currently pursuing a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology. He brings a background in mentorship, education, and social advocacy to his role.
With experience as a Teach for America Fellow and a volunteer tutor for Reading Partners, Silas has worked extensively with students facing academic challenges, developing personalized learning strategies to foster growth and confidence. His leadership extends to community engagement, having organized initiatives with several student organizations and contributed to policy research during his internship at his hometown mayor’s office in Boulder, Colorado.
As a Peer Mentor, Silas provides guidance on study skills, time management, and navigating college life, ensuring TRIO participants have the resources and support they need to thrive.
In his spare time, Silas is part of a local boxing gym and likes to play the cello.

TRIO Student Support Services is a nationally-funded program developed by the U.S. Department of Education in 1968. Since its founding, TRIO has expanded substantially, providing eligible students with support services to help them succeed in all aspects of their college experience.
